Have you ever been disciplined, corrected, or criticized by another person?
Solomon wrote in Proverbs 15:32 these words, “He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.”
Isn’t it amazing how another person’s unloving attitude or critical words can cut deeply into your heart? Let’s be honest, it hurts to be criticized and corrected by another person. Though there will be times when criticism directed at you is untrue or even misguided, God’s Word is very clear – don’t allow anger or bitterness to take root in your heart. The author of the Book of Hebrews wrote in chapter 12 verse 15 this, “Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.” We are instructed there to not respond negatively to the discipline. Instead, listen to the correction, and by doing so you’ll mature in your understanding of yourself and others.
This may be uncomfortable, but seek God’s wisdom anyway. Pray with the Psalmist in Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” He will reveal if there is anything true in what was said to you.
If there is, allow God to correct your behavior. If not, forgive your accuser and seek to understand him or her better. The Father can give you invaluable insight into the human heart through the experience if you’ll simply trust Him and set your heart to learn from Him.
May your prayer be, “Lord, I trust You. Help me forgive and love others more through this experience, amen.”
Seek to find good in negative situations.
